Grace Church has deep roots in the Coshocton community. Our story began in 1840, when a small group of twelve people gathered for worship in the courthouse jury box. As the congregation grew, plans were made for a permanent home, and a property on Third Street between Chestnut and Locust was purchased. After four years of dedicated work, the first church building was completed.
In 1880, Grace received a remarkable gift: Mrs. Elizabeth Spangler donated the land at the corner of 4th and Walnut Streets, where our church still stands today. A new building was constructed in 1880, and in 1903 the Sanctuary was added and dedicated, becoming the heart of our worship space
Over the years, Grace continued to grow. Additional education and office wings were built to support our ministries and the needs of our church family.
On May 20, 2022, Grace was struck by lightning, hitting the 4th Street wall of the historic 1880s section of the building. The old wood smoldered quietly until it finally ignited, causing the fire that changed everything. Even so, Grace has remained strong. While we rebuild our home, our church family continues to worship together just two blocks north at the Presbyterian Church. The building may be under construction, but the church is alive and thriving.
Today, we honor this long history by continuing the mission that began with those first twelve faithful people—serving God, loving our neighbors, and welcoming all who come through our doors.
